I Will Derive

"I Will Derive", a parody of "I Will Survive".

(via reddit.)

Now, the original song is clearly about female empowerment, and there is somebody who could be described as a "jerk" in the song. (Here are the lyrics, in case you've been living in a cave, or you're not from the US -- I'm not sure how well-known this song is in other countries.) I think this parody would be improved if it mentioned jerk, the third derivative of position.

Fantastic video, suitable cheesy. Hmm, I'll have to put it on the course webpage the next time I teach calculus...

That was fabulous. Considering I just taught a tenth-grader how to do derivatives so she could solve a problem like this, maybe I should send it on…

I agree that a mention of jerk would be good--maybe a third verse with an additional problem, and the word could refer ambiguously to either the derivative of acceleration or to the teacher who made this evil test.

I wish the word derive were used in this song in its wider sense, not just as a synonym for differentiate.

misha,

That's what I was hoping it would be when I saw the title. But even with the restricted meaning it's still good.

You should write another version for a PhD qualifying exam.

Yeah, the video is definitely good, except for the several times repeated phrase "there's just one way to find that slope," that rubs me the wrong way. There are definitely many ways to do it, and some (especially for polynomials) were known long before Newton and Leibniz. Replacing the phrase with "there is a way to find that slope" or "I know the way to find that slope" would be a definite improvement.
